Tele-Controlled Robotics for Manufacturing and Repair in Space
Tele-manufacturing is the ability to accurately transfer manual skillsets from local personnel to remote automation. EWI has been working within tele-manufacturing over the past 5 years by developing tele-presence technologies for welding, gouging, inspection, and other processes.
Manufacturing in space can reduce the cost of space launch due to having the availability to manufacture and repair assets in space. Currently there are limited repair, manufacturing, and assembly capabilities in space, resulting in added expenses to launch additional assets which further restrict size, weight, and power.
An AFWERKS funded project resulted in the development and demonstration of convergent manufacturing cell employing tele-welding and tele-repair for space applications.
Remotely operating a live process from earth or from a nearby spacecraft provides an opportunity for on-demand manufacturing process expertise in space. The benefits of a tele-manufacturing workforce include increased production and increased workforce engagement, and most importantly, eliminating the requirement of geographical proximity. The ability to accurately transfer manual skillsets from local personnel to remote automation allows for matching the best skillset for the job, independent of job location.
Using a hand-held stylus device with dynamic feedback allows the operator to move the remote robot in any direction and orientation and at any speed, with haptic response giving the operator the sensation of the actual environment. The operator views video from cameras and information rendered from other sensors to provide visual feedback allowing them to complete the manufacturing process remotely. Much like remote surgery, tele-manufacturing keeps the expert in the loop, making decisions as the remote process is occurring.
