Dr. McCarthy graduated from Virginia Tech in 2014, double majoring in Aerospace and Ocean Engineering. After graduating from Virginia Tech, he worked for two years at a.i. solutions as a flight dynamics analyst in Greenbelt, MD. He started graduate school at Purdue University in August 2016 under Dr. Kathleen Howell and completed his Ph.D. in May of 2022, where his research focused on computation and applications of quasi-periodic orbits in the cislunar regime. He currently works as a mission design engineer at NASA JSC on the Artemis mission design teams, designing trajectories for the next era of sustained human presence in and around the Moon.
